BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhuanet) — “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull,” the fourth of the “Indiana Jones” film series, took in 126 million U.S. dollars from Thursday to Sunday in North American theaters, according to media reports Tuesday.
Paramount Pictures predicted the long-awaited fourth installment of the adventure series would pick up an additional 25 million dollars on the Memorial Day holiday to bring its total to 151 million dollars.
It will stand only behind “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” which took in 139.8 million dollars when it opened on Memorial Day a year ago.
This fantasy adventure film, directed by Steven Spielberg, is the first one in the lucrative “Jones” franchise to hit theaters in 19 years.
Sixty-five-year-old Harrison Ford reprised his role as intrepid archeologist. George Lucas, who created the franchise in 1981, returned as executive producer.
Box-office sales for the film reached 37 million dollars Saturday, up from 25 million dollars Friday.
The increase suggests word-of-mouth was driving attendance for a movie that earned little critical praise, said Paul Dergarabedian, head of tracking firm Media by Numbers.
