A college student who spent more than 30,000 yuan ($4,000) buying a Western-style suit to attend a college banquet on Thursday has sparked controversy among locals in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.
The cost of the suit is more than many people in the city earn in a year.
Residents complained to Zhuhai United International College for requiring its students to wear expensive Western attire.
The college argued its case by saying the annual banquet attracted foreign professors and VIPs and gave students an opportunity to learn social niceties and develop relationships.
