A high-end cell phone bought by a college student in Tianjin municipality went berserk and sent out more than 4,700 text messages one night, chalking up a bill of more than 300 yuan ($42) for its owner.

The student, surnamed Yang, placed her new phone beside her on December 31 last year and woke up to the nasty surprise the next morning.

A technician who inspected her phone said it was faulty.

The girl hoped to repair the phone for free but found out its warranty had expired.
