A Zhengzhou resident surnamed Li has come to regret writing an IOU for 100,000 yuan ($13,300) to his girlfriend to compensate her for breaking up in 2003.
The Zhengzhou Intermediate People’s Court ruled the promise was valid and ordered Li to pay the debt on Monday.
Li, 31, fell in love with a local girl surnamed Xu in 2001 and they began living together in 2002. But the pair separated in 2003, prompting Li to write the IOU to compensate Xu. Xu then sued Li in September 2006, presenting Li’s IOU to the court.
And the court ruled in favor of the plaintiff on Monday.
