(China Daily)

A young woman in Kengli County, Shandong Province, has changed her name to win favor with her future mother-in-law.

The 21-year-old Li Fang met a man, surnamed Wang, at work, in May. They planned to get married next year, but first needed permission from their parents.

Wang’s mother, however, said she could not accept such a marriage as Li Fang had the same name.

Ages ago in China, family members sharing the same name was thought to be bad luck, or impolite to the elderly. After thinking it over, Li Fang said she would change her name.
