At least 5,000 earthworms on a lawn at South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou, Guangdong, were killed over the weekend by the hot daytime sun after they came out of earth for some fresh air.
“They came out of earth early and were together on the lawn when we saw them,” one student said. “Before they could return underground, they were all dried in sunlight.”
Such a massive suicide of earthworms might have been caused by an extreme change in their living environment when the lawn was flooded over with irrigation that day, experts said.
