A special “ugliness” contest has attracted both participants and controversy in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.

Several people registered after the organizer, a local company, put up a contest playbill on the city’s busy Huaqiang Road over the weekend.

According to the playbill, each person would get 100 yuan ($13.6) for registering and the champion would be awarded 10,000 yuan ($1360), equal to a local migrant worker’s annual income.

The event has also stirred up controversy among locals. Some said it is just a marketing trick. Some criticized the event for capitalizing on the pain of others.
