Hangzhou — A woman who stole a baby in a ruse to get her boyfriend to marry her has been sentenced 18 months in jail at a court in east China’s Zhejiang Province on Wednesday.
The woman surnamed Liu, 36, started pretending to be pregnant in October last year after her boyfriend’s family had rejected her as a wife because she had a tumor in her womb and was infertile.
However, with the false birth date looming, Liu decided to steal a baby in June, the court in Wenzhou heard.
Liu was hospitalized on June 24 on the pretext of an imminent delivery. At noon two days later, she took a baby boy from the hospital’s obstetrics department while the mother and relatives were napping.
Then she called her boy friend, saying she had a baby and told him to take her home.
However, Liu turned herself in to the police two days after taking the baby, who was returned to his family.
Liu was given a lenient sentence in the light of her voluntary surrender to police and confession.
