The Beijing Olympics organizers, the BOCOG, have denied earlier reports that it had invited South Korean performer, Rain, to sing the theme song at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympiad.

An official with the organizing committee said the BOCOG is the only valid source of news related to the Beijing Games, while reports from other media outlets on the selection of artists for the opening performance are unauthentic.

The official also condemned the intention of some performers and their agents of taking advantage of the Olympics for publicity.

He said the details of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Games are top secrets that wouldn’t be announced so early.

A South Korean newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, had reported that Rain, a popular singer in East Asia, has accepted the invitation from the BOCOG to sing at the Games opening gala and detailed talks are underway.

The news was later cited by a personal online blog in China, but triggered strong opposition as 76 percent of more than 10,000 surveyed netizens thought letting a foreigner sing the Olympic theme song was unacceptable.[by evodrift]
