In the current airing drama Hong Gil Dong, Sung Yu Ri played Huh Yi Nok who is a na’ve, silly but really cute girl. Together with her grandfather, Yi Nok acted as a doctor who sold medicine in everywhere. Sung Yu Ri’s image in Hong Gil Dong is completely different to her previous ones. Sung Yu Ri even appeared as a heroine with skilful martial arts.
This interview will help viewers understand how Sung Yu Ri deals with these new obstacles.
Interviewer: Before Hong Gil Dong is aired, many viewers noticed your change in image at this time. What do you think about this’
SYR: In my previous drama “Snow Queen,” I had to cry a lot. So, my mood was really down even after the film was done. After that, I want to play a joyful and happy character who always smiles in front of the camera. It’s a surprise that I received such an interesting script. I agreed to act in that drama right after reading its script. However, my manager was very worried and said that this new character would possibly damage my long-time image and wondered if I could do it well.
Interviewer: When the drama is shown, there have been many praises for you. How do you see them’
SYR: In fact, I once portrayed a joyful character before as in the drama “Prince’s first love” (co-stars with Cha Tae Hyun). However, because Huh Yi Nok is the lead female character in the story of Hong sisters: Hong Jung Eun and Hong Mi Ran, viewers’ expectation toward me is even higher. All the female lead characters in the Hong sisters’ works, such as Chun Hyang, Yoori and Jo Anna, are very interesting and loved by many viewers.
Actually, Huh Yi Nok is a very energetic and cute girl who can has both laughter and tears. I’m afraid that audiences might have prejudice about me and can’t see the actual insight of this character. This makes me really sad.
Interviewer: Do you think Hong Gil Dong has any difference with your previous works’
SYR: To be honest, after two dramas One Fine Day and Snow Queen, my thinking about acting changes completely. As of before, I used to memorize the script just like a book. But after these two dramas, I realized that if I understand the psychology and situation of the characters, I will act well naturally. With Hong Gil Dong, I don’t try to memorize all the lines in the script but try to grasp the script’s overall view. I spent time to think about how I should portray this character and play it my way in front of the camera. When I’m doing it, I feel like I’m really transforming into Huh Yi Nok. When I heard that there was an audience, while eating, suddenly spoke what Huh Yi Nok used to said, I felt very happy. I feel like my acting has been improving significantly, and that I’m on my way to become a really professional actress.
Interviewer: Is it tough while filming Hong Gil Dong’
SYR: It’s very very tough, even the toughest among all of my previous works. Because it is an action-historical drama, I had to do many dangerous actions like flying, fighting, and soaking myself in water in this frigid weather. Since it was freaking cold outside, Huh Yi Nok had to wear up to four layers of coats, and it made me look a little bit fatter. About the make-up, I haven’t had such simple make-up like that for a long time. All I need to do is washing my face and using some facial cream. Some people asked me if I felt regretful about that. I think it’s actually good because I don’t need to spend lots of time to do make-up. Looking back at my image on the screen makes me feel embarrassing (lauging).
Interviewer: Normally, do you love eating like Huh Yi Nok in the drama’ You don’t seem to eat a lot, do you’
SYR: I do like eating. However, I only eat high-fat and sweet food when I don’t have to work. While filming, I just eat rice, and I’m determined to not touch any other dishes, even my favorite food Pizza. Until I finish filming, I will comfortably eat whatever I like.
Interviewer: What about characteristics’ You seem to be quieter than Huh Yi Nok in real life’
SYR: That’s right. I’m an introverted person. I’m worry that if I say whatever I think, other people might be hurt. I adore Huh Yi Nok because she can say anything without having to worry about others’ feelings.
Interviewer: Many people compare you to actress Lee Ji Ah in Legend Do you care about what people think’ What do you usually do in this case’
SYR: Before, I used to pay attention to what people think of me, and how they evaluate me. I was even so sensitive that I asked them to explain to me those things. As I grow older, I become more optimistic when facing this issue. Because I won’t be able to explain every misunderstanding, I know eventually everything will be fine. Currently, if I feel sad, I will try to cheer myself up although it’s not that easy at all.
Interviewer: The minor characters in Hong Gil Dong are also very interesting. Is it helpful when you are co-working with many experienced actors and actresses’
SYR: Before the filming, if it hasn’t come to my scene yet, I would sit inside a car to read the script. But now, I enjoy watching other actors and actresses acting, it makes me feel like watching several different dramas. The acting of experienced actors and actresses is excellent; I learn a lot just by watching them.
Interview: Some male actors that have worked with you including So Ji Sub, Cha Tae Hyun, Gong Yoo, Hyun Bin… They are all famous stars now. There are two kinds of women: (1) ones that are loved by women, (2) the others are loved my men. You seem to fit in the second category. What do you think about this’
SYR: All those male actors said that they enjoyed working with me because of my image. However, when the filming started, they realized that I’m nothing similar to what they initially thought. I’m very quiet, and don’t know how to wheedle. When they told a joke, I didn’t know how to respond. After that, they said I’m more like a younger brother. Most people who like me are women. 90% of my fans are female. It makes me sometimes think that can’t I be loved by men at all’
Interviewer: Your answer really surprises me because men usually like women who are beautiful, nice and quiet.
SYR: Maybe that changes recently. Men nowadays seem to love energetic and sexy women like Lee Hyo Ri.
Interviewer: You turn 28 years old this year, have you thought about your ideal man’ What kind of men do you like’
SYR: I like a man who is cold in front of other people and sweet to me only. Men who are sweet to all types of women aren’t trustable in my eyes.
Interviewer: What are your new plans for a new year’
SYR: After One Fine Day, I think that I have to act more. My skill will improve more only if I continue to work on new projects. In 2008, I will keep on acting if I can find good scripts. [by KST_CICHLID]
