During the TVB Anniversary Show, when Edward To (杜汶澤) was announcing the winner of the Most Improved Male Actor Award, all the nominees appeared calm, all except for Kenneth Ma. Not only did he look nervous, Kenneth fiddled around and looked around the studio, pretending that the announcement would not affect him.
Kenneth explained, I was thinking about the dancing performance, I was afraid of doing the wrong steps. If you didnt win an award, no one would look you down. But its another story if you if you mucked up the dance.
Many people sound like they’ve memorised their whole thank-you when receiving awards but Kenneth could not stop thanking his company, colleagues and family when he was presented with his award. He even wished his cousin, who was getting married on the night, well in front of more than 2 million live television viewers. I never thought of saying anything! I was afraid of thanking the wrong people and when I suddenly remembered my cousin at the end of the speech, I thought I might as well say it as well.
As for his performance with Yoyo Mung at the TVB Artists Party, it has been uploaded on youtube and had over 30,000 people view the clip in less than a week. Kenneth commented, People wanted to see Yoyo because she is a beautiful girl But when told that the clip was named Kenneth Ma Pretending to be Ekin Cheng, Kenneth appeared to be hesitant and not knowing what to say.
Also, on the day of the photo shoot, Kenneth modestly told me (the reporter), Dont bring such expensive clothes for me to wear! when he found that his clothes for the shoot were French designer branded.
This also made me wonder if Kenneth Ma knew that he is one of the most heavily promoted TVB siew sung (male actor).
I do understand my current status. I dont want to compete with anyone. All I know is that I like acting and all I want to be is an actor.
When asked what he would do if all the TVB actors were fighting for the big brother title, Kenneth expressed that he would happily watch by the sidelines.
Despite being in the industry for eight years, Kenneth does not remotely appear like a promoted actor, especially his views on winning awards he was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actor and Best Leading Actor awards.
Truthfully, I did not expect to win any awards. For the supporting actor award, I had expected that Yiu-Cheung Lai or Kenny Wong to win. Even if my name was called out for the best male actor award, I would not have dared to go up to receive the award! I would just think Man, dont make fun of me. As for now, I know its impossible for me to get that award.
The only possible similarity that Kenneth shares with other promoted actors is that he has been involved in a few rumours.
In the past year, Kenneth has been rumoured to be dating Kate Tsui, Sharon Chan and Margie Tsang, a woman 9 years older than him.
A rough calculation has it that the Margie Tsang rumour is the only negative rumour that Kenneth has been involved in and in comparison to other promoted actors, Kenneth makes little headlines.
I think this is the case because I am rather reserved. In the past, I was really scared to talk to reporters. No one knew that. I was afraid of upsetting people by saying the wrong thing. One time, a reporter wrote something totally different to what I said. That made me extremely unhappy. During my time in S4 (Triumph in the Skies) I found it uncomfortable to see my face in the newspapers. I did not know what to do. So I would always hide in the sides when reporters were taking photos. Once, I even lied to a reporter that I was busy when they asked me to do an interview! I dont mind that I dont make headlines as much as other promoted actors. Sometimes, reporters would be rather snide when you make headlines too often. But, I have often been told off for this, saying that I did not help myself. They also said that advertisement companies do not watch television series to find a new spokesperson instead they will just find someone that they see often.
In 2003, when filming Triumph in the Skies Kenneth, Sammul Chan, Bosco Wong and Ron Ng fashioned themselves a group name called S4.
At the time of S4, I knew that the major spotlight would not be put on me because at the time, I was only a normal actor while the other 3 were contracted with TVB managers. S4 was focused to promote Bosco and Ron.[by dee-lush]
