Nowaday, the high pay rate of Korean stars is a big problem for producers in Korea.
Beginning last year, because of the competition of Korean movies, the production companies decided to cut down pay rate of the stars. They established an income system that based on the sold out tickets. It was successful when some of the stars volunteered to drop down their payment.
However, in the drama field, a disseminated problem is that some production companies have offered a high compensation only to invite a big star to appear in their dramas. As 2002, their compensation was only 5 millions won per episode. Now, that number is increased up to 50 millions won per episode. In just 6 years, the pay rate has increased 10 times.
Recently, the spending money for each episode in a drama is about 100-120 millions won. Looking at this ration, if the producers want to invite a big star to play in their drama, they have to lose half of their bucket. In that position, the producers have to cut out some other spending amounts such as advertisement, the minor casts and filming group’s salary. It affects directly to the quality of a drama. Therefore, Korean dramas are not being famous in Asia like before.
This is a list of stars’ salary in 2007 and 2008:
1. Bae Yong Joon: 200 millions won/episode in Legend
2. Kwon Sang Woo: 100 millions won/episode in Bad Love
3. Song Seung Hun: 70 millions won/episode in East of Eden
4. Park Shin Yang: 50 millions won/episode in War of Money
5. Lee Jung Jae: 45 millions won/episode in Air City
6. Choi Ji Woo: 40 millions won/episode in Air City
7. Go Hyun Jung: 40 millions won/episode in HIT
