KUALA LUMPUR: Come November, Malaysia will have its own answer to Chinese martial arts movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero and House of Flying Daggers.
Malaysian director C.L. Hor (The 3rd Generation) is set to begin filming on the first ever Malaysian Chinese martial arts movie.
Titled Kinta 1881 and set in pre-Merdeka Perak, when gang wars were common among rival tin mining colonies, the film will star former world wushu champion Robin Ho in the lead role. Also in the movie are three national wushu champions Michael Chin, Kuan Fei Jun and Shawn Lee and world taichi exponent David Bao from China.
Hor told a press conference that 60% of pre-production work was already completed, and filming would begin in April.
We will be filming in various locations in Perak, including Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, Teluk Anson, he said.
Although they were hoping to recruit a well-known Hong Kong martial arts choreographer to direct the action scenes, Hor stressed that he was trying to make this movie a fully Malaysian production.
Almost the entire production from acting, directing, crew members and even the soundtrack will be done mostly by Malaysians, he said.
Kinta is the first film to be made under the newly formed film production company Absolutely Black a collaboration between Hors Blackbox Pictures and event management company CMG Absolute. It is set to be released in November.[by 145loke]
