AFTER several postponements, Martin Nievera has finally started his stint at the Steve Wyrick Theatre at the Aladdin Hotel on February 26. He has a one-year contract with them and performs nightly except Fridays.
‘Steve Wyrick, the owner of the theater, is a gifted magician and he needed a Sinatra-kind of act before his own show,’ says Martin. ‘I actually started with my soft opening on Valentine’s Day.’
He’s now represented in Las Vegas by the same people who handle the careers of celebrities like Barry Manilow and David Copperfield. He’s also launching his own cologne, IM Fragrance, in California. IM stands for Inspired Madness but can also mean I Am Martin or I Am excited, whatever the wearer wants it to stand for.
The scent is concocted by Filipino chemists who also made the perfumes of other celebrities, like J Lo and Michael Jordan. Martin hopes to market it later in the Philippines.
Martin is now comfortably settled in Las Vegas with partner Katrina Ojeda and their 4-month old son, Santino. Last month, he had a reunion with his family on his birthday, organized by Katrina as a surprise party for him. His mom, Conchita Razon, and dad, Bert Nievera, were there and it was the first time he saw his parents together after so many years. His twin sister, Vicky, was also there for the occasion, along with the members of the Society of Seven, and Jasmine Trias who’s substituting for Lani Misalucha while Lani is here in Manila.
He still considers the Philippines as his comfort zone. ‘I do get homesick as my home is the Philippines. But for now, my home away from home is Las Vegas. Before, I only had family in the Philippines, with my sons Robin and Ram. Now, I have Santino here in Vegas. If Robin or Ram decide to study in the States, I will be ready for them.’
