In the Taiwanese Idol Market, I still feel that Zheng Yuan Chang is the odd number (very rare), from a model until he is now acting in Idol Series, his first character is where he has to play as a girlie guy who seems to be gay; even being considered or rumored to be gay in real life. Lately the TV Series [They Kiss Again] which is currently airing is able to receive high rating in Taiwan and this has just reconfirmed Zheng Yuan Chang as the A-list actor in the Idol Series.
Xiao Zhong’s (Zheng Yuan Chang) earliest production when he just came into the entertainment industry will be [The Rose], still remember the filming set during those days, the media’s first attention was on the 3 girls, S.H.E, who was very popular during that time, the second will be the mother, Cecilia Yip and followed by Jerry Huang who was the winner of the Male Model of New Silk Road Modeling competition. At that moment, under the strong recommendation from the production team, Xiao Zhong diligently introduces himself to the media, but the media just gave him a polite response and that was all. And of course later the media hardly ever mention him in the articles as well.
Because of the production team plus the determination of Zheng Yuan Chang himself, after having a few interview session with him, I’ve (the reporter) started to know and understand more about him, even noticed that he is heading to the top by taking one step at a time to become the A-list male actor in the idol series.
During those days in [The Rose], even though the series is having 2 leading male actors, Jerry Huang and Zheng Yuan Chang, and if it was based on the story plot and the characters themselves, the first lead will be Jerry Huang and Zheng Yuan Chang will be the second lead. But by looking at their first acting role, the way they interact with the media and how they talked during fans meeting events, it can be seen that nowadays the development of their acting career in the entertainment industry are really different.
About his first series, even though Xiao Zhong could not immediately identify his own path for his acting career but his initiative and determination did manage to lead him taking each step forward. At that time, almost everyday, Xiao Zhong would log on to the forums of the TV Series to check the comments left by the fans of the series and would reply to them as well. Because of his determination and friendly interactions with the viewers, in no time he’s able to obtain a group of very loyal fans. Regarding the media, he’s also taking the initiative to approach them, greeting them during all kinds of festivities throughout the years, and he seems to really enjoying the whole process too.
Since his first character’s sexual preference was being questioned, so Zheng Yuan Chang didn’t purposely avoid the topic at all, he likes to behave in a childish yet grown up way while interacting with his fans. The unusual thing will be maybe since from the start he is not setting himself as those cool and manly guy image because normally the fans will have a huge crush on this type of male idol, so his fans didn’t really seems to care whether he’s gay or not, they just wanted to love and support him.
Normally male idol will have the good-looking image, sometimes their stylish appearance would still being questioned about whether they are gay or not, so this did not happened to Zheng Yuan Chang only. When the male idols becomes more and more popular, they would starts to have rumors like this, F4’s Jerry Yan was once being rumored to have a close and intimate interaction with his male companion and it was after the rumor with Lin Zhi Lin that it has changed the focus of the media. For Wang Li Hong, other than his rumors with Ah Mei and Shu Qi, once his name was being reported on the gossip column together with Yan Kai Tai. Even Andy Lau, the forever idol, having on and off rumors about Carol Chu and him already have a daughter together and yet there still have rumor mentioning the whole daughter incident was actually a cover up story. And of course the winner of numerous best male actor awards, Tony Leung would still have this kind of gay rumor even though he already has Carina Lau by his side for all this years.
Is Zheng Yuan Chang gay’ Maybe throughout his acting career we (the readers) maybe not have the exact answer like we do from Leslie Cheung and Kevin Tsai but from his latest work [They Kiss Again], Xiao Zhong’s acting skills has been greatly improved and he already understands about how he should carry himself during on and off screen.
