With his slickly-styled hair and porcelain smooth complexion, Taiwanese pop star Show Luo looks every bit the consummate superstar he has come to be. On a promotional blitzkrieg( no spelling error, i have no idea what this word means) for his new album, Show Your Dance, Show’s seemingly boundless energy is infectious and baffling, considering how he’s simultaneously juggling hosting, filming a new drama and his first world tour, Show On Stage.
When quizzed about how he keeps his sanity intact, Show chuckles, “oh, no need to. My fans know I’m a schizophrenic anyway. They know very clearly what “role” I’m currently playing, like if I’m acting, I’m showing side A, hosting is side B, performing is side C etc.”
No matter what “role” he is playing - whether he is the charismatic performer on stage, or the perennial class clown, Show is an enigma, and he knows it!
Fifth time Lucky
No surprise then that the talented popster’s fifth album, Show Your Dance, has just topped the charts for album sales. “I’m so proud of this album because I know that people initially thought I couldn’t sing, but the album improved so much. They said, quite frankly to me, “Wow! I never knew you could sing! That was such a good thing to hear, ” grins a happy Show.
We ask him if it hurts to hear criticisms of his weak vocals. Show ponders before answering, “Well, good and bag singing is subjective. The media can say all they want, I don’t care. If the fans like me, then that’s enough. They’ll support me, no matter what. Besides, I didn’t always sing well. I sang off key too, you know!”
Show going off key’ We don’t think so. His new album is an immaculate conception that boasts some of the industry’s most prominent big wigs in its line up including Paul and Peter Lee, F.I.R’s Real Huang and lyricist Lin Xi. But the real highlight is Show’s very own self-penned track, Keyman.
His eyes light up instantly. “This is my first fast number. It feels so weird ‘cos previously I only wrote ballads. But when I pitched this fast song, the company thought it was good, and they were thrilled to use it.”
Will he go the direction of other singer-songwriters who contribute to all the tracks in the album’ Show shakes his head. “Honestly, I don’t have the time to write. Plus I’m not like Lee Hom, who’s smart enough to write all those songs. It’s so stressful. Don’t try to kill me lah!” jests Show.
Don’t Call Me King
Speaking of stress, Show confides that it has been extremely stressful to be dubbed Asia’s new dancing king. He admits that it is a title that makes him cringe every time, anywhere.
“Please don’t call me king of dancing or whatever it is. I’m just a young guy who likes to dance. Besides, there are so many people who are better dancers than me. I’m not a dancing machine right, so don’t call me that,” Show protests.
We remind Show that it is the album title and cover artwork that reinforces his image as a dancing king. The dishy star heaves a sigh before continuing, “That’s true, but the focus isn’t on dance. With the exception of the first single, the rest are mid-tempo tunes or ballads. The album is more about showing off rich variations and styles.”
it seems like our fave star won’t be producing a full-fledged dance album anytime soon then. Show affirms resolutely, “I certainly won’t. I don’t know what way music will go in the future, but i believe the one with money should think about it. I don’t want to bother. What if i say do it and then the album doesn’t sell!”
We know you want more on Show!
He thinks a song rocks if… “You only need to hear it once to remember the chorus completely!”
He “loses” when a girl… “cries or whines. I can’t win her like that.”
He thinks Elva Hsiao is cute… “Before I knew her, I thought she didn;t have much substance, but after filming the video to Defeat In Love, I think she’s fun, cute and generous.”
He thinks everyone can be like Mr Pig, his wacky character in Entertainment 100%… “All you need is toilet roll, lip balm, spectacles, walk with a twist, and say “good good good” too many time!”[by By Bang Wei-Tin]
