When Destiny plays Cupid

Do you believe that love is the greatest force in the universe and that it has the power to bring people together Can one person complete another Does love really find you How will you know that there is a person out there just for you Is he or she supposedly the one you have not found yet but the one you know by heart

These questions will get their answers in Muli, the grandest afternoon soap opera that presents love in its entire splendor and how destiny plays Cupid.

Alfred Vargas plays Lucas

Muli is a production of GMA Network and Malaysian production outfit Creasian SBN Bhd, and stars one of the Philippines most-sought-after leading man, Alfred Vargas, and beauty-queen-turned-actress, Carrie Lee, respectively giving life to characters Lukas and Cheryl.

In this melodrama, Vargas plays Lukas Rivera, an OFW who works in Malaysia, leaving his loved oneshis wife (Marian Rivera) and child (Renz Valerio)to secure his familys future. He meets Carrie Lee by chance and somehow their initial friendship blossoms. They fell in love and withstand complications and drama.

The soap is very heavy. So many scenes are very emotionally draining, and naubusan ako ng luha. I do not often do that in my previous roles, and this drama made me comfortable in doing crying scenes. Honestly, I even interviewed my house cleaner at home because her husband is an OFW and asked about the loneliness and pain she goes through. I studied the script, and it is a very thick script because they gave me the whole season to read, shares Vargas on how he prepared for his role.

He is very thankful to his home network for this big break. He believes that aside from his acting skills, his being very Filipino looking and having brown skin tone were primary reasons why he bagged the role.

How was it like working with Lee Its an honor. When I was in Malaysia, I can see her billboards all over. One good thing about her is her utmost respect for the Filipinos craft specifically in acting, directing and the manner we work on our productions. They have high regard for our capabilities in show business. I immediately felt that respect, so we clicked instantly. She is a superstar who has no airs, very humble. She is very hardworking and professional. Her stature in her country can be compared to our Miriam Quiambao. I also like the fact that she is very honest. When you inquire what is wrong, what her problems are, what she likes, what makes her happy, she replies sincerely and truthfully. She is very poised, very regal, every inch a beauty queen. You cannot take away the fact that she is very attractive physically, Vargas says.

He also discloses some observations about the working attitude of the other Malaysian actors: They are very good. In Malaysia, when you are made as an actor in TV, you only play on TV. You do not crossover into doing films. Their attack to acting is more external and expressive. They work with much better working hours. The shoot there is only up to 14 hours. They come on time and have memorized all their lines.

Any conversation with Vargas will not be complete without asking the status of his relationship with LJ Reyes. He admits, We cannot really predict what will happen if you are in love with someone or if you are in relationship. Let me go straight to the point. We are currently in cooling off period, and this is because of the fact that we have no time for each other. We were fighting a lot because we were not spending time with each other anymore. I was doing two shows. She was wrapping up her soap and she is a deans lister in La Salle. Aside from that, we have to attend to our families. I think this situation is good. I can say it works for us. The space makes us more relaxed now.

Why should we watch this soap We really worked hard on this one. Muli will surely touch the lives of televiewers. This will also make them realize that when you have thought all along that you are with the perfect someone, it is still destiny who will dictate who is the perfect one for you. We will know in time what destiny dictates. When it comes to matters of the heart, there is no such thing as a barrier.

Carrie Lee comes to Manila as Cheryl

Carrie Lee is a person, when asked a simple question, answers long. In one sitting, she shares to this writer the entire season of her soap that she topbills with Alfred Vargas, the emotional rollercoaster ride that her character Cheryl goes through, the many twists and turns of the plot and exclusive revelations about her leading man and screen kiss.

Her character comes from a conservative Chinese family, set to be engaged to a man she does not love. Thus, she runs away from home to elope with her fiancé. Unfortunately, her fiancé changes his heart. He realizes that he is not yet ready to settle down. Zul, the name of the man, sends word to Cheryl through Lukas. As Lukas and Cheryl cross paths in an awkward situation, a simple friendship blooms that leads to passionate romance. This affects their lives and the people surrounding them.

I am very thankful to director Mac Alejandre because he always brings me to my character. He teaches me to feel and act naturally. He always wants me to bring out Cheryl and not Carrie. I cannot say that I am very good actress but I give my best. I really appreciate the kindness of our director and my co-actors as well, she says.

What can she say about the sterling qualities of her leading man Alfred Vargas is a young man who is a good companion for me. He is very responsible and disciplined for I see how he carried himself during our shoot. Sometimes he is funny, too. I think he is one person who enjoys and loves his craft as an actor. I think we share that. We have some things in common. We love fast cars. We love to watch F1 races, and I hope he can come to Malaysia this March to watch the race with me. Let me say that he is such a gentle person. When I was having problems, he comforted me.

Did Alfreds kiss comfort her You know, it is my very first kissing scene. Back in Malaysia, we kiss only on the forehead and cheeks, never on the lips. At first, I rejected the idea but since being the professional that I am, and I know that it was very important to the story, I have to do it. I was very scared and nervous during the take, and I do not know if I was doing it right. Thank goodness, it was just one take! If they show this in my country, even if it was a very tender kiss, it will surely create some stir.

Aside from Vargas and Lee, Muli stars Malaysian actors Tony Eusoff, Dynaz, Alvin Wong and Daniel Tan together with our very own Alicia Meyer, Gabby Eigenmann, Odette Khan and Victor Neri. Mac Alejandro directsit.
