Grange Hill: school’s out forever
The last ever episode of school drama Grange Hill has been screened.
First shown in 1978, the popular series tackled social issues such as drugs and teenage pregnancy over the years.
The show was axed after TV bosses said it was no longer relevant to the lives of modern children.
Grange Hill creator Phil Redmond said that the drama had lost its hard-hitting purpose and that it was “time to hang up its mortar board”.
The final series focused on the school’s younger pupils, rather than teenagers, and the last episode saw an unexploded bomb discovered underneath the school.
One of the show’s most famous characters, Peter “Tucker” Jenkins, wearing his trademark black leather jacket, also made an appearance. Tucker was played by actor Todd Carty from 1978 to 1982 - the period considered to be the show’s heyday.
Tony Wood, creative director of Lime Pictures, said: “It has been a privilege to be involved with one of the great titles in the history of British television.
“I am proud of the relationship that Lime has built and maintained with the BBC over the past few years and look forward to working with them on future projects.”
