Hidden rock star photos up for sale
A shy photographer has come out of the woodwork and released previously unseen images of some of the world’s most recognisable rock stars.
Justin Thomas, left boxes of photographs lying around his Brixton flat, south London, and it wasn’t until he was persuaded to by a neighbour to exhibit them at a gallery that they have become public.
The find includes classics such as The Stones at London’s 100 Club, The Clash at The Music Machine, Bob Marley at Crystal Palace Bowl, Blondie at The Roundhouse and The Stone Roses at Spike Island.
A spokeswoman for Brighton’s Sydney Street Gallery - where the exhibition is being held - said Mr Thomas’s then neighbour Claudine Sinnett spotted the pictures while having a cup of tea and was amazed so many important images could be just tucked away unseen.
When she opened the gallery she approached him to see if he would be willing to do an exhibition and he agreed to do so.
The Sunshine Bores The Daylights Out Of Me will be the first of several exhibitions to take place over the next couple of years.
Images will be available to buy at the exhibition as limited edition runs of 50 and will be sold from 300.
Further shows will include other eras such as 80s pop with Michael Jackson, Bowie and Culture Club, and the 90s, with such groups as Oasis and more of the Stone Roses as well as one of Kurt Cobain’s last concert, Britney Spears’ first one, and Madonna.
Mr Thomas said: “It’s great that I’m finally having an exhibition as I’ve a lifetime of images that have just been gathering dust.
“I’ve always tried to bring something exciting or different into my photos. Some artists are easier to work with than others. Some are diamonds, some are ego crazy and I learned to use my cunning and anticipation and charm to bend the rules to get the frames I wanted.”
The exhibition takes place from Saturday to November 16.
