Hollywood writers protest against American Idol bosses of underpaying workers

July 17th, 2008 Posted in World Showbiz News

Officials at the Writers Guild of America (WGA) - the union responsible for the recent US writers strike - have chartered a ‘Truth Tour’ bus to shadow the current auditions for the programme, which began in San Francisco, California, this week.

The campaign is part of an ongoing feud between the union and producers of reality TV series such as American Idol.

The WGA has long sought to represent their workers, claiming their jobs involve a form of writing - but most reality shows are not covered by union contracts.

David Weiss, vice-president of WGA West, says, “All these shows, they’re well-structured. You can’t sit through an hour of television that is the result of random footage being strung together.”

The bus, carrying around 50 protestors, will follow the American Idol auditions as the event travels around the country.
