Carina Lau and Tony Leung getting married have been topics many people and the paparazzi have been discussing about. Is there a reason to get married? Recently, Carina Lau gives an interivew to Lin Yan Ni(林燕妮, or Lam yin Lei, 香港女作家, 廣州”南方都市報”專欄作者).
Lin Yan Ni : Why do you want to get married?

Carina states “I will take care of my husband for the rest of my life. He is like an child, actually every man is a child. “
Why did you consider to officially get married? “My father has always wanted to see me get married. But it’s a pity that he never did. My mother on the other hand just tells me to take it easy. My friends say that there are 3 aspects in life. Living, dying and marriage. We don’t know when what will happen when we are living, yet we don’t know when we will die. But we can feel that special moment when we get married. That’s why I feel I need to get married to experience that moment. “
Lin Yan Ni : How do you communicate with each other?
“We have been together for 20 years, obviously there will be arguments. The best way is when it’s a fiery situation to not argue, calm down and then respond.”
Carina states that they both have completely different personalities. She likes to be active and enjoys talking to people, whereas Tony is the opposite. He actually can be quite playful but people don’t often see that side of him. “Tony is very shy, he doesn’t know how to express himself or communicate well. He has very little friends. But I admire his quiet personality. I like to see things positively rather than negatively. That’s what makes me happy.”
Lam Yin Lei remembers Tony saying he will take sleeping pills when he had arguments with Carina. He said that he would take out 2 tablets and both of them would eat 1. Carina says “He can take it himself, I rather talk about any issues immediately, I have to argue during that time, I can’t sleep on it. When he doesn’t respond I get more fiery. But in the morning, when he apologises then I am fine. I do not hold grudges. We have been together for 20 years, there have been numerous arguments. But I agree that when your arguing it’s best to let things cool down, then respond. If he has issues with me, he will normally talk to me about them.”
How do you see yourself ?
I am feel very inferior, people often see me as the “The girl from Mainland China(大陸妹,香港人對於來自大陸的女人具有一定歧視性的稱謂)”.
In “Lust Caution”, Tony had many sexual nudity scenes. “I was well prepared for Tony to film the movie, I wouldn’t feel any jealousy. We don’t normally use the bathroom together either. One of us would use it after the other. When your in the bathroom it is a very private moment and you can reflect on things. “
“I have always felt very inferior about myself. People always see me as the “The girl from mainland China, Dai Luk Mui” But after the incident of me getting forced to pose naked 18 years ago, many of celebrities in the Hong Kong Entertainment industry supported me and encouraged me. I could not believe it, I was very touched by everyone. Really, I am so touched, I never thought people would standby me or even think about me. The belief that I was just a girl from Mainland China had slowly drifted away. “
The Nude shots Incident, how it happened?
Carina feel’s that she needs to reveal the details and not suffer in silence. “18 years ago, many triad leaders invested money in making movies. There was one who wanted me to film his movie, but I refused. That is why they decided to punish me.” (How did you resolve the issue? ) “ Later on I decided to film one of their movies without any costs. Tony didn’t like the idea and felt uncomfortable, therefore he declined many movie offers and went together with me to Holland. He spent his time with me everyday. “
“I must state that the 4 triad members did not harass me. I do not hate them as they only followed their leader’s orders. I actually feel thankful that they didn’t harm me. “
When is the Wedding?
“Of course I will invite good old friends that have worked with me for years. But I do want to have a very big wedding. Two people who were raised from different areas and able to be together for so long, is not easy. This year we will get married, but the wedding will be small. My mother and Tony’s mother are not too focused on the wedding arrangements. However, I will invite some of my good friends and relatives only. Tony doesn’t have many friends so it will be very quiet. I don’t have many friend’s in the entertainment industry either, Faye Wong is one my best friends and will be my brides maid. “
“Tony’s mother is very independent and she is very cute. We asked her to come and live with us but she wouldn’t. She prefers to live in Sai Kung. It is difficult to ask my mother to live with us too. She is now living in Shanghai, as my brother is working there. But when I have time, I will visit them in Shanghai. I will also visit my home in Suzhou. Although the dialect in Suzhou is different to Shanghainese. But we understand each other. “ Last year Carina’s father passed away. She was very upset, during that time Tony was seen hugging Carina comforting her and holding her hand while she was crying non stop.

How does a 15 year old who had not finished studying at school and not being able to understand Cantonese survive? “My father arrived in Hong Kong first, I wanted to find a job to help my family out. But who would hire me with my background? So, in 1980 I went to Hong Kong and joined the TVB Acting Academy course. But during that time, my Cantonese was very poor. My tutor Lau Fong asked me to take a Cantonese language course for a year, if I improved then he would accept me on the course. The opportunity was not easy to get, therefore I did my best in improving my Cantonese. I met Sandra Ng, Margie Tsang, Yammie Lam and Lawrence Ng on the same course. I believe that nobody else can help you and you must improve yourself. “
”I started to act when I was 18 years old. It was really good in the 80’s, that was the time of Hong Kong’s golden years. Nowadays the younger generation just look at the Virtual world everyday, they don’t know what romance actually means. I really pity the younger girls now because they will find it hard to get a boyfriend. They will have problems communicating with people. It’s all about singing Karaoke nowadays, many don’t have manners or have interest in many things anymore. Many guys have suddenly become homosexuals, what else will happen to this world? “
”I think if people communicate more, have a good drink and chat it will be better. The guy can be romantic by taking care of the girl and demonstrate his gentleman manners. Originally, I didn’t want to become an actress. I just wanted to find work fast. The TVB course was for 1 year, during that time I learnt a lot of Chinese characters. But the hard thing was filming one series after another. It was very tiring. To be honest, there has not been a favourite role I have done in a TV series. I just see acting as part of a job, I never felt the determination or excitement of working in a TV series. I don’t think I knew what being actress was all about back then. I didn’t have a management or assistant, everything I did was based on my own memory of what to wear for the event. “
”When I started filming movies, I developed the passion for acting and for the roles. (说谎的女人) was the second movie I filmed. I worked with Cheung Suk Ping who taught me a lot and made me very happy. He taught me how to get into character. I didn’t know I had feminine qualities, but after working with him I slowly felt it. “ ( You have filmed many movies, which is your favourite? ) “I don’t have one particularly favourite, being an actress is tiring. There are many bitter moments as an actress, sometimes you can handle it with calming your mind and EQ. But nowadays the paparazzi’s are hard to handlel. “
Why do you love Tony Leung?
”I think that he is a guy with talent and we connected straight away. There are many reports that have hurt me in the past. Now I just encourage myself that the news reported is somewhat good, at least they are still interested in writing about me.
Tony was in the acting course the year before me. When we worked on the Theatre show (花心大丈夫) I found that Tony had talent and we connected straight away. I felt in love with him within that moment. “

“What is most important for an actor is to get a good role to play. Tony has had more opportunities than me. I really have less and less opportunities nowadays. I asked Tony before why this happens, he said that because I didn’t have much luck. He doesn’t need to take care of the house work, everything is handled by myself. Tony was very tired after filming “Lust Caution”. He is already over 40, actually he’s nearly 50. But he felt if he declined John Woo’s “Red Cliff” movie he wouldn’t be able to play ZhouYu. That’s why he decided to help him out by acting in the movie. I think that he did a very good job, also he had to speak Mandarin throughout the movie. He is a very strange guy, he likes to challenge himself with very difificult goals. He had been working on his Mandarin everyday with his tutor, I admire him. “
“While l was going to Michael Miu’s house, I was dragged into a van. They blindfolded me and I was very scared. I was scared that they would kill me and throw my body deserted place. I was praying while I was inside the van. I could hear them talking on the phone receiving orders from their leader, but I couldn’t see anything. But actually before I went to Michael Miu’s house I had already received a telephone call threatening me. Tony has been there for me all the time. When I was freed, he didn’t say a word. He just cuddled me and said (Am I okay). When we found out who the triad leader was, I decided to help him film a movie without any costs to resolve the issues. Tony went together with me to film it in Holland.”
On the Wedding day
“We now know each other very well and have nothing to hide. Many of the press still misunderstand me. When the time comes I will not refuse in having kids. I just don’t want to many people to turn up at my wedding,. The day is about both of us and our happiness. “
