Jones bids for chart return

Tom Jones will be making a bid for the charts when he delivers his first album in 15 years.

Titled 24 hours, the new project will be released in the US in October and the UK in November.

The 68-year-old said the new album had a “retro sound”, comparing it to Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black.

It will also include a track he co-wrote with U2’s Bono and the Edge and two covers of songs by Bruce Springsteen and Tommy James and the Shondells.

Jones said: “We’ve been thinking about this for a while, doing a retro sound but new.

“And Amy Winehouse, she cracked it. When that album came out, my son called me right away and said, ‘You know what we’ve been talking about? Listen to this’.”

Now based in LA, the veteran Welsh singer has sold more than 100 million records worldwide since 1965.

“The fire is still in me,” he said. “Not to be an oldie, but a goodie. I want to be a contender.”
