Lil Wayne scoops 12 nominations at BET hip-hop awards

Rapper Lil Wayne looks set to dominate the 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards - he’s been nominated in a massive 12 categories.

The star leads the way with a variety of nods - his album Tha Carter III has picked up a nomination for CD of the Year, while his smash hit single Lollipop, featuring Static, has garnered him praise for Best Hip-Hop Video.

And he is named twice in the Track of the Year category - for Lollipop and A Milli.

But he isn’t the only multiple nominee - he will face competition from Kanye West, who has seven nominations, and Jay-Z, who has picked up six.

The three rap superstars will go head to head for the accolades of Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year, MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the Year, Track of the Year (West’s Good Life featuring T-Pain, and Jay-Z’s Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)), and CD of the Year (West’s Graduation; Jay-Z’s American Gangster).

Other stars up for awards this year include Snoop Dogg (for Best Hip-Hop Video for Sensual Seduction), Akon (Producer of the Year), Nas (CD of the Year for his self-titled LP), and TI, who is nominated for Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer and MVP of the Year.

Rap mogul Russell Simmons will also be presented with the I AM HIP-HOP Icon Award.

The awards will be handed out at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center in Georgia on 18 October. The show will be hosted by comedian Katt Williams, and will air on the BET cable network on 23 October.
