Veteran actress Liu Xiaoqing will reprise a teenage role in her new television project.
“Xu Beihong,” a biopic drama about the late Chinese artist, started filming in Hebei Province on Monday, the Beijing Times reported.
Liu will portray Jiang Biwei, Xu’s first wife from the age of 19 into her 50s.
Although she declined to reveal her real age, it has been speculated that the actress was born in the early 1950s, probably in 1951, according to many websites.
As a popular film star during the 1980s, Liu had a “second spring” on the screen in 1995 when she played Empress Wu Zetian (625-705) in the same-titled TV series. In her 40s, she successfully portrayed China’s only female emperor from ages 14 to 80.
“It is very easy to play a teenage girl,” said Liu at a press conference on Monday. “I have gone through that age and know how to embody naivety. For me, the difficult part is playing the old, as you have to imagine [what it is like].”
