Neon Neon call on DeLorean owners
Mercury Music Award-nominated Neon Neon have decided that if they’re going to play a gig in Cardiff they’re going to do it in style and have persuaded a venue to make an iconic 1980s vehicle the centre stage of their show.
The Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) is appealing to any DeLorean DMC-12 owners to get in touch ahead of a rare gig by the band.
The electronic act is a collaboration between Super Furry Animals’ frontman Gruff Rhys and Los Angeles-based industrial dance producer and musician, Boom Bip.
Their album, Stainless Style, is based on the life of the notorious 80s motorcar-maker John DeLorean and has been critically acclaimed.
Efforts are now being made to trace any owners of the car which is perhaps most famous for being used in the hit film Back To The Future.
In one of the most famous lines of movie history, Marty McFly, played by Michael J Fox, asks Dr Emmett Brown: “Wait a minute, Doc. Ah… Are you telling me that you built a time machine… out of a DeLorean?”
The doctor answers: “The way I see it, if you’re going to build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?”
And his penchant for the iconic is shared by bosses at the WMC, who want to feature the car prominently ahead of the concert in November.
Gareth Lloyd Roberts, theatre programmer, said: “Gruff’s really nuts about the life of John Z DeLorean and the crazy history behind the man and his machine.
The car’s the star, and we didn’t think we’d be able to stage a Neon Neon Stainless Style performance without a gleaming gull-wing or two outside the front of Wales Millennium Centre.
“We’re hoping to be able to offer Gruff a ride round in one as well. So if anyone’s got a mint DeLorean they want to show off, then let us know.”
He added: “This is a unique chance to see the very best of Welsh talent in a different way.
“It’s our ambition to show the world why top music-makers like Gruff Rhys continue to reinvent and revitalise the vibrant music scene in Wales.”
