Netizens claims Quake Docu-drama Unimpressive
The 14-episode docu-drama portraying China’s relief efforts after the devastating May 12 earthquake in southwest China has concluded on China Central Television channel one.
Although studded with stars from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, the series has repulsed audiences with its coarse voiceovers and exaggerated performances, sina.com.cn reported.
Its theme of promoting Chinese people’s fortitude in the face of a calamity was admirable, netizens said, but the production standards were not up to the mark.
For instance, the voiceover for Fan Wei, an actor famous for his heavy accent, was so fake, it was hard for people to take his character seriously.
In response to the criticism, Zhao Junkai, director of the docu-drama, explained that the shooting took place in Sichuan where it was difficult to record dialogues due to continuous aftershocks.
Hence, voices were dubbed on to the film after the shooting, Zhao said.
Some audiences understood this technical problem, and said the producing team deserved recognition for working in such a harsh environment.
The series was filmed in a record time of 35 days.
