Portman shows off directorial debut
A screening of the movie marking Natalie Portman’s debut as a director opened the short films section of the Venice Film Festival.
Film fans queued round the block to see Eve, which includes Lauren Bacall and Ben Gazzara in the cast.
The movie concerns a young woman named Kate, who visits her grandma Lola for dinner, and is surprised to find her grandma is on a date with a man named Joe.
Portman, who was on the jury at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is a Harvard University graduate, has said that she has always had a fascination with the younger generation.
Such was the clamour to get in that hundreds of people were left outside as the cinema filled up. The actress arrived nearby dressed casually.
UK entries are also being shown this week in the short films section.
I’m In Away From Here is the first film by Catriona McInness, a student of Napier University and Screen Academy Scotland. She wrote, produced and directed the 22-minute film for a Masters of Fine Art degree in Advanced Film Practice.
The film was shot in Scottish locations such as Leith and Portobello and features a mix of professional and non-professional actors in a story of friendship and the overcoming of personal and social barriers.
She said in her director’s statement that she wrote the screenplay after seeing two young men marching along a street enthused with attitude.
McInnes said: "One had a pronounced limp and the other had unusual, exaggerated mannerisms, but they both had a curious presence that inspired me to write."
