One of the most popular and iconic television programmes of the 1990s has been re-vamped and “glossed up” for a new generation of viewers.

A re-imagined Beverley Hills 90210 has hit screen in the US - 18 years since it first premiered - with a new cast, the reappearance of some old faces and plenty of controversial issues.

The two-hour pilot episode of the show, which has been shortened to 90210, features sex, plagiarism and drug use, all of which are sure to make the original seem innocent in comparison.

Original stars Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty reprise their characters, but this time they’re playing very different roles.

Garth has taken on the role of high school guidance counsellor, while Doherty is portraying a drama teacher.

Both actresses took their time when deciding to participate in the project. Garth said: “I was shocked to hear that they were going to be doing the new show.

“But my shock sort of settled in, and then absorbed it, and I decided that I wanted to be a part of it.”

Doherty’s return was seen as something of a shock, given that reports suggested she left the show under acrimonious circumstances.

However, she is glad to be back and gave a ringing endorsement to the shows new stars. She said: “This group of kids has their head on straight. Like, they are very smart. They’re very creative. They’re very talented. They totally understand what they signed up for.”
