Stars appeal for Haiti aid
Matt Damon and Wyclef Jean have toured parts of Haiti, calling for aid in the hurricane-ravaged country.
The pair visited a school shelter to drop off cooking oil and bags of beans in the city of Gonaives, which was recently hit by tropical storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike.
Damon said: “I’ll just try to tell people what it was that we saw, which I still can’t quiet believe. You know, I’ve seen extreme poverty before but I’ve never seen it coupled with a natural disaster.”
Damon and Jean are encouraging more people to help the UN raise more than $100 million for an estimated 800,000 Haitians in need of aid after four devastating tropical storms and hurricanes since mid-August
Jean said: “It’s hard to speak about it if you don’t see it so having seen it first hand we really think it’s important that the international community, the Americans, that everyone really engage and really help restore Gonaives.
“We don’t feel that it’s going to be a short term thing so we feel it’s going to take consistency of a whole lot of aid.”
